About St James the Less

St James the LessSt James the Less

According to Hegesippus, a Jewish Christian and Church historian of the 2nd century St James was called "The Just One". Greatly loved by Jewish leaders and people, he became a powerful evangelist causing attitudes towards him to change.

Because of his influence with the ordinary people, Jewish rulers asked him to go to the highest pinnicle of the temple so that he would be heard denouncing Christ. Of course, instead he re-affirmed his faith that Jesus was the Messiah.

As a result, he was thrown from the temple with a view of killing him. In fact, the fall didnot kill him outright so they began to stone him to death. During this he prayed, "Father, forgive them for they know not what they do". Then one of them, a fuller, took the stick with which he beat out the clothes and brought it down on the Just One's head to finally kill him.

Because of the manner of his martydom, St James the Less or the "Younger" is always portrayed holding a fuller's club.
